Just because the tank looks full does not mean it needs pumping
A septic tank is a storage tank with at least one partition wall that acts as a filter, and in normal use it stays almost completely full all the time. That is how it is supposed to look.
What actually needs removing is the solids that settle at the bottom and the scum and grease layer that forms on top. Every three to five years is the right interval, and the reason is the drain field: let the solids carry over into it and you are into the genuinely expensive end of this business.
How the system works
The outlet side of the tank sits slightly lower than the inlet. Waste collects in the first compartment, solids sink, grease floats, and the water moves through to the second compartment where the remaining solids settle out. The water then exits toward the drain field, sometimes via a distribution box, and is absorbed and processed naturally by the soil.
A septic system can last up to forty years depending on the type installed.
